How do we record time in history?
Methods of recording history While recorded history begins with the invention of writing, over time new ways of recording history have come along with the advancement of technology. History can now be recorded through photography, audio recordings, and video recordings.
How do historians know what happened during that time?
Historians mostly rely on written documents to reconstruct the past. Before 3000 B.C.E. writing did not exist, as far as we know. Accordingly, events earlier than this time are referred to as “pre-history,” before written history!

They are written as though they are collections of information. In fact, history is NOT a “collection of facts about the past.” History consists of making arguments about what happened in the past on the basis of what people recorded (in written documents, cultural artifacts, or oral traditions) at the time.

History provides us with a sense of identity. People need to develop a sense of their collective past. Events in the past have made us what we are today. History prepares us to live more humanely in the present and to meet the challenges of the future because it provides us with understanding of the human condition.
